Slate Youth Centre continues with annual Trick or Eat program

-

While some Halloween-goers will be shouting out “trick or treat” next Wednesday night, another group making their rounds in Truro will be sharing the message of “Trick or Eat.”

That is the name of Slate Youth Centre’s program in which volunteers make door-to-door rounds seeking donations for the Colchester Food Bank.

“Poverty is still an issue and food security is still an issue in our area,” said Slate director Crystal Crossan-zak. “We still have a lot of children that live in poverty and food security is often one of the things that suffers the worst when people are struggling. So it’s one way to address poverty in the area.”

This is the eighth year the youth centre has held its Trick or Eat drive and she is hoping to beat last year’s record collection of slightly more than 2000 lbs. of food.

“I’d love to see 2,500 pounds for this year,” she said.

Crossan-zak said between 30 and 40 volunteers from the Dalhousie Agriculture Faculty, the NSCC Truro campus and Slate members will be participating in the drive but others are encouraged to join in as well.

“We can always use some extra volunteers from the community,” she said. “And it’s a great opportunity for families to get involved because the kids can trick or treat and the parents can trick or eat.”

Volunteers will be gathering at the Slate centre at 883 Prince St. about 5:30 p.m. on Halloween night and will make their rounds until 8:30 p.m.

Anyone else wanting to participate can call 902-893-3991 and leave a message with your contact information if no one is immediately available to speak with you.
