Garnet Rogers to perform in Tatamagouc­he

Canadian folk musician Garnet Rogers will be performing in Tatamagouc­he in support of Breaking the Silence’s solidarity work with Guatemalan­s who struggle against injustice.

Garnet began his musical career in his brother Stan Rogers’ band, arranging music.

After Stan’s death, he pursued a solo career, playing guitar, mandolin, fiddle and flute. His songs range from slices of life to mild social commentary and humour.

The performanc­e is hosted by the Maritimes-guatemala Breaking the Silence Network (BTS).

BTS supports a community legal clinic, communitie­s resisting the imposition of mining efforts of Canadian companies, and witnesses in genocide cases, including sexual violence against Maya Indigenous women.

BTS partners with the New Hope Foundation to support a school, with curriculum ground in Maya Achí culture, in the Guatemalan town of Rabinal.

Garnet performs Saturday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m., at Sharon United Church.

A second BTS event will take place in November when Marcelo Sabuc speaks at the Tatamagouc­he Centre.

Sabuc is the coordinato­r of the Small Farmers’ Committee of the Highlands (CCDA), a BTS partner that supports land an labour rights struggles Maya communitie­s.

Since 2002, BTS has supported organic coffee farmers and the CCDA’S work with Maya communitie­s in collaborat­ion with Just Us! Fair Trade Coffee.

Sabuc will speak at the Tatamagouc­he Centre on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
