CEC su ers rst tournament loss of the season

The CEC girls volleyball team had their undefeated season come to an end last weekend after a semi nal loss at the Saint Mary’s University invitation­al tournament.

In what was easily the most exciting match of the tournament, the Cougars lost a close three-set match to the Dartmouth Spartans 16-25, 25-20, 15-17. e Dartmouth girls came out swinging in the rst set and had the Cougars on their heels throughout. CEC fought back in the second set with strong blocking and serving to win. In the third set, the Spartans took a 3-0 lead but the CEC serving and defense allowed them to build a 13-7 lead. Dartmouth ran o seven straight points to serve for the match at 14-13 only to have the Cougars come back to serve for the match at 15-14. A strong block and two well-placed tips later and the Spartans had their rst win ever over the Cougars.

Prior to this match, the Cougars had defeated the Spartans in straight sets four times this season. CEC went on to win the bronze with a straight-set win over J. L. Ilsley. e Cougars had won all ve previous tournament they entered this season.

After a slow start, the CEC JV team had straight set wins over J. H. Gillis and Sir John. A in the consolatio­n round to nish 10th in the 15 team event.

The Cougars finished first in their round-robin pool with straight-set wins over Sir John A and C. P. Allen. ey went on to defeat Riverview in straight sets in the quarter nals. e CEC junior varsity team had straight set losses to Riverview and Citadel on Friday evening before defeating Avonview in three sets. On Saturday morning, the JV squad blew a big lead to lose in three sets to Northumber­land before their strong nish against J.H. Gillis and Sir John A.

Leading the varsity Cougars’ attack was Maddy Ball with 31 kills followed by Emma Fortunato and Maddie Greatorex with 15 kills each. Caitlin Whooten was the top server with 20 aces and 51 successful serves for a 3.19 serving average, while Mariah Putnam had 15 aces and 47 successful serves. Maddie Greatorex was the top serve receiver with 18 perfect passes followed by Caitlin Whooten with 11 perfect passes. Whooten also led the team on defense with 25 spike digs followed by Ball with 15 and Mackay Kincaid-webster with 14.

Fortunato led the team in blocking with six stu blocks and 10 continue blocks while Macailin Tanner had ve stu blocks and eight continue blocks. Putnam had another outstandin­g weekend as the Cougars setter.

Sydney Davidson led the JV Cougars’ attack with 35 kills followed by Mackenzie Matheson with

20 and Marlee Mcquillan and Molly Marquis with 17 each. Davidson was also the top server with 17 aces and 55 successful serves. Abbie Archibald had 11 aces and 42 successful serves. Davidson also led the team in serve-receive with 16 perfect passes, while Mackenzie Matheson had 13 perfect passes. Sarah Garrett was the top defender with 21 spike digs followed by Davidson with 20.
