Cougars take second straight provincial crown

Make it back-to-back titles for the Cobequid Cougars boys baseball team.

The Cougars downed the Horton Griffins 6-0 last Saturday to capture their second straight Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation Division 1 title.

The victory capped a great season for the Cougars, who posted an overall record of 11-1. During the past two seasons, the Truro team is a jaw-dropping 28-2.

Jackson Haight pitched a complete-game two-hit shutout for the Cougars in the championsh­ip game. He was dominant and struck out 13. Connor Angers led the offense with four hits and Haight helped his cause with a pair of singles.

In semifinal action, the Cougars trounced Riverview 11- 3. Darsey Pratt, Bailey Mackinnon, Michael Jollimore, Angers and Haight each delivered two hits and Chad Mingo picked up the win, striking out nine over 6 2/3 innings.

In preliminar­y action, the Cougars were edged 8-7 by the Halifax West Warriors and earned a 16-2 win over Glace Bay.

In the loss, the Warriors scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap a comeback victory. Haight singled, doubled and tripled for CEC, while Jollimore and Irwin each added two hits and Luke Creelman doubled. Mingo, Quinn Cashen, Haight and Irwin saw mound duty.

In the lopsided victory over Glace Bay, Angers singled and doubled, Mackinnon swatted three singles, Marshall Field tripled and William Macgillivr­ay and Irwin singled. Tanner Greatorex was the winning pitcher.
