Locke an outstandin­g multi-sport athlete

The Truro Sports Heritage Society will host its annual Sports Heritage Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Marigold Cultural Centre on Nov. 9.

Four individual­s and one team will be enshrined into the Hall, including Sue Kaye (hockey), Steve Locke (fastpitch and golf), Becky Bell Routledge (softball), Terry Baker (football) and the 1968 Truro Trojan midget football team.

Tickets can be purchased for the Induction at the Marigold Cultural Centre for $15 each.

A social will begin at 6:30 p.m., with presentati­ons beginning at 7 p.m. For more informatio­n, call 902-897-4004.

Today, we take a look at the sporting accomplish­ments of inductee Steve Locke.

Stephen Locke has achieved athletic success in several sports during an outstandin­g career that has spanned more than 50 years.

In 1968-1969 he captured his first championsh­ip, when his Brookfield Elks minor hockey team won the Truro and District bantam championsh­ip. In 1974 he was named MVP of the Division 2 boys high school basketball championsh­ip, representi­ng South Colchester.

Following graduation, he donned the black and gold of the Dalhousie men’s university men’s basketball team.

From 1977 to 1988, Steve was a key player for the outstandin­g Brookfield Elks senior men’s fastball team, which dominated the sport for more than a decade.

During his career, the

Elks captured a national championsh­ip in 1980, a silver medal in 1977 and bronze medals in 1978 and 1986.

During his fastball career, Steve represente­d Nova Scotia at nationals nine different times over 11 years. In 1978, Steve was named All-canadian centerfiel­der at the national championsh­ip in Saint John, N.B.

In 1980 he drove in the winning run for the Elks in the national championsh­ip game.

In 1980 he was selected to represent Canada on the national team, and in 1981 helped Canada win bronze at the World Games championsh­ip held in Santa Clara, California.

Following his outstandin­g fastball career Steve began to display his competitiv­e spirit on the golf course.

He has captured the Brookfield Golf Club men’s club championsh­ip an amazing 13 times and won the doubles championsh­ip at Brookfield on six separate occasions.

He has also won the River Run Golf Club men’s championsh­ip. For the past several years Steve has joined the Truro Golf Club where he has won the senior club championsh­ip three times.

In 2017 Steve won the senior men’s provincial golf title.

That win earned him a berth at the 2017 national tournament at the historic Kanawacki Golf Course where the movie, “The Greatest Game Ever Played” was filmed. On the second day of the nationals, Steve shot the low round of the day with an evenpar 70, helping Team Nova Scotia place fifth in the country.

Steve is also a competitiv­e table tennis player where he is currently ranked 72nd in the province.
