NOVA SCOTIA MUSIC WEEK KICKS OFF TODAY
Connor James is a musician who went against the usual flow of performers; he moved from Toronto to Halifax.
He and the other members of June Body will be performing in a Nova Scotia Music Week showcase in Truro on Friday, Nov. 2.
“I moved to Halifax about three years ago, to be with a girlfriend who was in a program here,” he said. “I was looking for a change. I wasn’t happy in Toronto, and I really love it here.
“June Body has been playing for about two years. I found one member through a Kijiji ad, and then when our original drummer had to move back to New York we dug through the local music scene to find someone.”
The alternative pop rock trio consists of James on guitar and vocals; Alexander Callaghan, on bass and vocals; and Johnny Rankin on drums.
“The music is inspired lyrically by relationships- mine and those around me,” said James. “The big theme lately, especially with the new album, is coping with depression within a relationship.
It is something I deal with myself. I tend to go through almost massive weights, where I’m unable write, then I gain mental clarity I can express things through writing.”
June Body was on tour during the summer, performing at venues in Montreal and Ontario. They have two recordings and have been nominated for alternative recording of the year.
“I honestly was not expecting the nomination,” said James. “It’s very exciting, and we’re very happy to be part of an amazing showcase.”
