CEC girls win regional crowns

CEC varsity and JV girls volleyball teams won Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation titles last weekend.

The JV Girls travelled to Antigonish for their tournament where they recorded straight-set wins over Northumber­land ( 25- 8, 27-25), North Nova (25-4, 25-0) and Dr. J.H. Gillis (25-6, 25-4). The varsity girls played regionals at Northumber­land High School in Alma where they also posted straight- set wins over Gillis ( 25- 20, 25- 11), North Nova (25-4,25-11) and Northum- berland (25-17,25-14).

As a result of their win, the JV Girls will host the NSSAF championsh­ip at the CEC Gymnasium on Friday and Saturday. The varsity girls will now advance directly to the NSSAF Division 1 championsh­ips in Bridgewate­r on the Nov. 30 to Dec. 1.

Leading the Varsity Cougars at regionals was Maddie MacGregor, with 19 kills, followed by Hannah Huntley with 12 kills. Macailin Tanner led the team in attack percentage with 45.5 per cent, followed by Maddie Mac- Gregor (42.4 per cent).

Maddie Greatorex was the top server with 10 aces and 22 successful serves, while Caitlin Whooten had eight aces and 27 successful serves. Whooten was also the top serve receiver with 10 perfect passes, followed by Maddy Ball with five perfect passes. Whooten led the team on defence with 11 spike digs followed by Hannah Huntley with seven spike digs and three tip digs.

Mariah Putnam returned to the Cougars’ lineup and her all- around play was a major factor in the CEC win. In addition to running the Cougars’ offence, Putnam had six service aces, three kills and seven digs.

Sydney Davidson once again led the JV Cougars attack with 14 kills followed by Marlee Mcquillan with 11 kills and Molly Marquis with nine.

Erin Reeves led the team in attack percentage with seven kills out of seven attempts. Paige Crosby had seven kills and only one hitting error and Mcquillan had 11 kills and no hitting errors. Abbie Langille was the top server with 29 aces and 45 successful serves. Mcquillan had 12 aces and 30 successful serves.

Molly Marquis led the team in serve receive with six perfect passes, while Georgia Bailey was the top defender with five spike digs, followed by Erin Reeves and Mcquillan with four each.

Mcquillan led the team in blocking with five stuff blocks, while Abbie Archibald had a very consistent performanc­e as the JV setter, running a varied and balanced attack.
