Cobequid Dance Academy staging The Nutcracker
A magical Christmas tradition will come to life on the stage of the Cobequid Educational Centre when the Nutcracker is performed by a troupe of young dancers.
About 90 students with the Cobequid Dance Academy will be taking part in the show Dec. 1 and 2.
“This is the twelfth year for this,” said Melissa Page-webster, owner of the dance academy.
“The main thing is to give students the opportunity to be part of a holiday tradition that takes place all over the world.
“The students are supportive of one another. We see things like last year’s Clara working with the girl who is Clara this year.”
Rehearsals began the first week of September, with 90 dancers taking part. About 30 volunteers, including former dancers, form a backstage crew.
“Everyone puts their own twist on the show,” said Page-webster. “We have it set in the 1920s, and there are a lot of beautiful costumes.
“For a lot of people, seeing this is how they kick off the holiday season.”
Some people attend the performance every year, but there are always people seeing it for the first time too.
The Nutcracker will be staged Saturday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 2 at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $18, and can be purchased online at www.cobequiddance.com or in person at Cobequid Dance Academy from Monday to Friday from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
