The Boat Harbour Act must be honoured

To the editor:

Northern Pulp is calling on the public to support its request for more time to build a new effluent treatment facility.

Let’s be crystal clear. The only way Northern Pulp can have more time is if the Boat Harbour Act, which became law in May 2015, is not honoured.

Pictou Landing First Nation has clearly stated they expect Boat Harbour to be closed on schedule, nothing less. There can be no more broken promises to the community of Pictou Landing First Nation, which has lived with and suffered from the devastation caused by pulp effluent in Boat Harbour for more than 50 years.

Northern Pulp has been given five years to build a new facility. That is long enough.

This is a time for citizens to speak out in support of Pictou Landing First Nation.

We invite individuals, groups, organizations and businesses to sign the declaration at friendsofthenorthumberlandstrait.ca to declare your support for honouring the Boat Harbour Act.

Please let Pictou Landing First Nation know that they have public support, and do not stand alone.
