Pictou community orchestra offers seasonal entertainment
Truro’s St. Andrew’s United Church will provide the venue for a holiday presentation by Pictou County Community Orchestra.
The Annual Holiday Concert of seasonal and light classical favourites is being presented this Sunday, Dec.2 at 3 p.m. at the church at the corner of King and Duke streets.
Musical Director Ken Henderson will lead the orchestra with a variety of musical offerings, including selections from two popular holiday classics, The Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky, and Handel’s Messiah. The orchestra will also present light classical variety pieces including the Liberty Bell March by John Philip Sousa and The Ladies Polka by Hungarian composer Bela Keler. Further international musical flavour will be offered by the traditional Ukrainian Carol of The Bells.
Special musical guests for this concert will be Consort, a quartet of Truro musicians who enjoy exploring a varied repertoire of music for four recorders coming mostly from the Renaissance and Baroque traditions.
The group consists of Susan Greaves, Joy Miller, George Macintosh and Ken Henderson, musicians with a variety of musical experiences and backgrounds.
It is an annual tradition to have the audience participate in a sing-along as part of PCCO holiday concerts, and they will be able to sign along to their favourite Christmas carols with the backing of the full orchestra.
The Pictou County Community Orchestra has been an outlet for local amateur musicians for 30 years and members range in age from teens to seniors.
Members live in Pictou, Antigonish and Colchester and Halifax counties and meet weekly during the September-to-june period to rehearse music for presentation to the public at two or more public concerts each year.
New members are always welcome, and anyone interested is encouraged to speak to a PCCO member at the concert.
Tickets for this concert are $10 each or $20 for a family and will be available at the door.
