Sexton scores OT winner to lift Bearcats over Rapids

Kyle Sexton scored the gametying goal and netted the winner in overtime as the Truro Bearcats edged the Grand Falls Rapids 4- 3 in overtime on Sunday in the Maritime Junior Hockey League.

The victory came after a 6-0 defeat at the hands of the Edmundston Blizzard on Saturday.

On Sunday, Sexton netted the equalizer at 9:46 of the third period and notched the winner at 2:10 of overtime. Shaun Bily and Carson Lanceleve also scored for the Bearcats, who improved to 13-7-1-1.

Grand Falls led 3-1 after 40 minutes, before Bily cut the deficit to one at 9:31 of the final frame. Sexton tied it 15 seconds later to send it to extra time.

Myles Hektor, who replaced Alec Macdonald early in the second period, was the winning goaltender, stopping 25 shots.

Truro sits in third place in the Eastlink South Division, two points behind second-place Amherst and 11 back of the leaguelead­ing Yarmouth Mariners.

On Saturday, Edmundston goaltender Francis Asselin stopped all 33 shots the Bearcats threw his way in the win. Dallas Maurovic potted two and Logan Johnston had three assists for the winners. Hector made 27 saves.

On Thursday, Nov. 22, the Bearcats lost 4-1 to the Pictou County Crushers. Gavin Hart had the lone Truro goal.

The Bearcats return to action Saturday when they visit the Valley Wildcats. On Sunday, Truro hosts Miramichi for a 2 p.m. puck drop at the RECC.
