December heats up at the decoste

Wide variety of talent featured during the festive season

The decoste Performing Arts Centre has an impressive schedule of Christmas shows featuring a wide variety entertainm­ent that includes comedy, dancing, Celtic, traditiona­l country and folk music.

Two performanc­es of Tis the Season 12, Dec. 6 and 7, get it rolling with 7:30 p.m. performanc­es featuring Cape Breton’s infamous Bette Macdonald and Maynard Morrison who have created another holiday favourite, sure to be filled with comedy and musical performanc­es by the seasoned cast. The show has become a staple at the decoste but remains fresh with new material each year.

Cape Breton’s The Men of the Deeps choir bring their beautiful harmonies to stage for two performanc­es Saturday, Dec. 8 with a matinee at 2 p.m. and a 7:30 p.m. show, featuring songs from their Christmas in the Mine CD.

The following weekend an array of performers present The Celtic Christmas Show on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Talent includes RCMP Pipes, Drums and Dancers along with three other dance troupes. There will be an all-star band led by award-winning artist Shannon Quinn, and more.

The next day, Sunday, Dec. 16 features a matinee performanc­e at 2 p.m. for the Christmas show The Magic of a Gift: An Acoustic Christmas with Roxeen and Dalrymple. The pair will present a classic guitar and mandolin duet performanc­e of vocals, rhythm and traditiona­l melodies for this special acoustic Christmas show, delivering a deep-rooted mix of traditiona­l country, bluegrass and gospel music.

The highly acclaimed Christmas Show by the Ennis Sisters is being brought to the Maritimes for the first time this year and will be at the decoste on Tuesday, Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m. The three Newfoundla­nd siblings – Maureen, Karen and Teresa – will combine original and classic holiday songs, humorous recitation­s and sisterly banter, with Irish step-dancing to create one of the finest family Christmas shows in the country.

The final show in the decoste’s Christmas Series features two of the busiest solo musicians in the country, multi-award winning and 2018 Canadian Folk Music Award Nominees Dave Gunning and JP Cormier, with A Gunning & Cormier Christmas!

The show will feature new and old song favourites, and a few good laughs.
