Gouda cheese, Portuguese coffee sauce featured in Truro’s Burger Week offerings
Burger Week is coming up and a number of local eateries are offering up impressive platters to help raise funds for the homeless society.
TRURO, N. S. – Got a hankering for a nice, “smoking gouda burger”?
Or how about a classic bacon and cheese griddle burger flavoured with a tasty, sweet and spicy sauce?
Those are just two of the 10 signature burgers that will be available during Truro’s upcoming annual Burger Week.
“It’s becoming more and more popular every year,” said local pub and restaurant owner Derek Forsyth.
Last year’s Burger Week generated more than $8,500 for the Truro Homeless Outreach Society (THOS) but Forsyth, a primary organizer behind the fifth annual event, is hoping to top that figure this year.
“It gets more and more exciting every year and we hope to raise $10,000 this year,” he said. Burger Week runs Feb. 17-23. Trevor Macdonald, owner of Hub Grub on Inglis Place in Truro said his signature offering will be the smoked gouda crunch.
“We’re doing a smoking gouda cheese with bacon,” he said, adding other ingredients include mayo, lettuce, red onion, bacon and BBQ sauce.
“It’s a nice taste with the barbecue sauce,” Macdonald said. Some years Hub Grub has featured somewhat wilder tastes but he decided to tame things down this year.
“We get a lot of new customers that week so we kind of like to keep it a little simple.”
Kyle Milberry, chef at Roadside Willies on Pictou Road, Bible Hill, will be featuring a classic griddle burger this year, complete with crispy fries and coleslaw.
“We’re going to do the bacon cheese griddle burger infused with our Portuguese coffee steak sauce,” he said,
“Those who like it, like it a lot,” he said. “It’s a little bit sweet and spicy … a nice blend of flavours. It’s not too overpowering on any side.”
“Not too spicy and not too sweet,” added one of the restaurant servers from the background. “I love it.”
Two new restaurants have been added to the Burger Week challenge, meaning 10 locations will be offering their signature burgers Feb. 17-23.
The new additions are Cheese Curds/habaneros at the Truro Power Centre and Great British Grub on Prince Street.
Each participating restaurant will be offering their signature burgers and fries (or possibly another side in some instances) for $12 plus tax. Of that, $2 from each burger order will be donated to the homeless society.
“The town has embraced this and it’s becoming a feast,” Forsyth said. “And we may have to revisit the whole aspect of it next year. But we plan on doing this for years to come and maybe start a committee to see what we can do to keep growing this.”
The last day of Burger Week will also coincide with Coldest Night of the Year, an annual fundraiser for the Homeless Society.
“We feel that it’s a worthwhile cause and so do the other partners with Burger Week,” Forsyth said.
