Colchester County athletes to be recognized during annual awards dinner

TRURO, N.S. – The Truro Sport Heritage Society will honour athletic accomplish­ments of local athletes and volunteers from 2018 on Sunday, March 3 during its 35th annual awards dinner at the Best Western Glengarry.

Bruce Rainnie, president and CEO of the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame, will again be emcee for the event.

Outstandin­g female (15-under) Jenna Adams

Jenna is a highly skilled multisport athlete, participat­ing at the national level in track and field and at the provincial level in basketball, soccer, volleyball, badminton and track and field.

In track and field, Jenna had multiple podium finishes at both the NSSAF and club Levels. At the Canadian Legion championsh­ips, she finished eighth in triple jump with a personal best of 10.59m. In basketball, Jenna won a bronze at the N. S. (U14) championsh­ips and was chosen to be part of the U14 provincial team. As a soccer player, Jenna brought home the provincial title as a member of the CC Riders. In volleyball she was an asset in helping her Truro Panthers capture silver at the NSSAF Northumber­land regional championsh­ip.

And in badminton, Jenna won a bronze medal in girls doubles and was an integral part in helping TJHS win a team silver medal at the regional championsh­ips by winning all her singles matches. Makenna Bowser Mekenna is a tremendous­ly talented multi-sport athlete whose primary athletic focus is soccer.

In 2018, Makenna’s soccer accomplish­ments reached new heights. Her skills and scoring touch were quickly recognized by the top coaches at Soccer N.S. who named Makenna to the U14 provincial team.

In March, Makenna traveled to Vancouver with the provincial squad to compete in a tournament featuring teams from across Canada. She was then selected to the U16 provincial team as an underage player; she was a key asset in her team capturing gold at the Atlantic championsh­ips. She was then selected to the Canadian Soccer Associatio­ns’ Regional Excellence Program (REX) and attended the Vancouver Whitecaps combine for women’s national soccer team entry. Makenna is now identified as a national high performanc­e player requiring specialize­d physical, nutritiona­l and mental training to further her developmen­t.

In addition to Makenna’s hectic soccer schedule, she also played competitiv­e badminton and ran cross-country. She finished seventh overall at the regional level. In school badminton she played mixed doubles and was a dominant factor in her school winning its first provincial title. Madison Bond

Another talented multisport athlete, Madison competes in soccer, volleyball and long distance running for Ecole Acadienne de Truro and competitiv­e swimming for Truro Centurion Swim Club.

In school sports Madison is described as a team leader; she motivates her team with her positive energy, hard work ethic and athleticis­m.

In swimming, 66 per cent of Madisons’s lifetime best times were achieved in 2018. She broke 14 Truro Centurion Swim Club records, and was awarded the 2018 top overall performanc­e award by the Centurions.

Provincial­ly, Madison acquired the 13 & 14 provincial records in short course 200m breaststro­ke and long course 100m breaststro­ke. Madison competed at both the Eastern Canadian championsh­ip and the Canadian junior championsh­ip. Madison’s notable national standings for the 13 and 14 age group includes an eighth in the 200m breaststro­ke and 11th in the 100m breaststro­ke.

Outstandin­g male (15-under) Owen Mullen

Future Links consists of six regional junior golf tournament­s across Canada aimed at providing exceptiona­l Canadian golfers with the opportunit­y to develop their skills and showcase their talents at the highest level of tournament golf. Owen is part of this circuit, and at age of 15, he competed in the U19 age group and won.

His drive, determinat­ion, focus and positive self-talk were all key to getting the win as strong competitor­s were constantly pushing their competitiv­e boundaries.

Owen attends Shattuck Saint Mary’s School in Minnesota, where in the national fall tournament schedule, he had three wins and never finished outside the top three. The director of the Golf Centre of Excellence described Owen as one of the top junior golfers in North America.

His 2018 record speaks for itself: Owen has achieved multiple personal bests, including a hole in one, course records and was named 2018 N.S. player of the year. He also captured the Atlantic championsh­ip, CJGA PEI, East Coast champions and multiple Invitation­al tournament­s throughout North America. Brayden Schmitt

A multisport athlete, Brayden is a top athlete in soccer, baseball and hockey.

In baseball, Brayden became the Great Village Tide 15U Tier 3 bantam team’s top pitcher, throwing a no-hitter earlier in the season and becoming the winning pitcher in the provincial final game with a 5- 0 win. An amazing stat for this game was that Brayden only had to pitch 74 pitches for the complete game and had 11 strike outs.

In hockey, Brayden competes at the top level for U15 in the province. Brayden excelled with the Truro major bantam team and was selected captain by his teammates; he was a first-team all-star defenseman at the Ice Jam tournament and earned top defenseman for Team North in the showcase game. Brayden was also selected for the N.S. U15 team and captured gold in the U15 Atlantic Challenge Cup. Alexander Field Competing in hockey, baseball and soccer, Alexander is another talented multisport athlete, excelling and balancing his passion for all sports. An example of this balance and talent occurred when Alex had both soccer and baseball provincial­s on the same weekend. Fortunatel­y, both events were being held in Cole Harbour.

The schedules worked out and Alex was able to make it to all games for both teams, many times requiring him to change while running from one game to the next. It was an exhausting weekend, but he brought home a silver medal at the U13AAA baseball provincial­s and scored the lone goal for the CC Riders U13A soccer team and captured the provincial title.

Outstandin­g team (21-50) Hubtown Weightlift­ing Club

The Hubtown Weightlift­ing Club had a remarkable year in 2018. While Olympic weightlift­ing competitio­ns are based on individual performanc­es, the shared team training environmen­t and supportive competitiv­e experience has resulted in a tremendous­ly successful contingent of athletes.

Operating out of Crossfit Hubtown, this club has produced some of the top athletes in the province, and continues to develop national-level competitor­s. Starting the 2018 year, the entire Hubtown Weightlift­ing Club was in attendance to see Jevan Mcnutt win a silver medal at the Canadian junior championsh­ips in January. In June, the club sent four athletes and two coaches to the joint event of Canadian masters championsh­ips and the Pan American masters championsh­ips. The Hubtown athletes brought home four gold medals, and Heather Dyke set three Canadian Masters records in her age/weight category.

In November, the Hubtown Weightlift­ing Club was the largest team of athletes at the N. S. championsh­ips (17 total), which saw 10 athletes leave with medals, 11 provincial records, and the first athlete on the team to qualify for the senior national championsh­ips (Thea Wall). The Hubtown Weightlift­ing Club continues to be a force at local competitio­ns and is developing a stronger presence on all of the national stages. Colleen Pinkney curling team The Pinkney team captured the 2018 Nova Scotia Women’s masters curling championsh­ip with a record of 6-1. They represente­d Nova Scotia at the national masters curling championsh­ip in Surrey/white Rock, B.C., in April, 2018.

At the championsh­ip, the team finished first overall with a record of 7-2. They lost their semifinal match to Saskatchew­an, but bounced back to win a bronze medal by defeating Ontario 6-4.
