Cougar Dome contingent posts strong Atlantic results
The Cougar Dome’s high performance tennis athletes posted some of the best-ever results for Truro at the recent indoor Atlantic tennis championships.
The four-day event, held in Fredericton, featured the strongest tennis players Atlantic Canada has to offer.
The Cougar Dome sent seven athletes to the tournament, and came away with three titles and numerous other strong results. The brother-sister tandem of Cayden and Joni Colburne performed very well. Cayden captured the under-10 boys singles title in three sets, and Joni claimed third in under-10 girls singles, despite being just seven years old. The pair also teamed up to make the U10 semis in doubles.
Meghna Anand took home the most hardware over the weekend, advancing to three finals and capturing two titles. Meghna defeated fellow Truro player Sofia Gonzalez in the U12 semis, going on to capture the title with an impressive 6-2, 6-1 win over second-seed Paige Ramsey in the final. She teamed with Sofia to take home the girls U14 doubles title, and finished second in U14 singles. Emalla Desgagne was fifth in U12, including a tough come-from-behind win over Raktika Galwa 1- 6, 7- 6, 7-5 in the consolation quarterfinals.
Zach Verboom suffered a tough three-set defeat to Nico Mir in the boys U14 quarterfinals, but rebounded to finish second in U14 doubles with Matthew Bennett of Halifax. Clarke Fullerton posted a pair of tough three-set wins to finish fourth in U18 singles, and lost a close match in the U18 doubles quarterfinal.
These results represent months of training and preparation, and Cougar Dome manager/coach Francois Giguere was thrilled with the results. With their wins, Sofia and Meghna both advanced to the Canadian indoor junior nationals later in the year.
