TRURO, N.S. – Holly Fisher and Laura Whiteland are directing a lot of energy toward making Colchester County as inclusive as possible.

The women are involved in the formation of the Truro Pride Society.

“We’ll work on Pride Week events, do community outreach and development, and team up with other partners,” said Fisher. “We’ll advocate on behalf of the2Slgbtq ia+ community with partner organizations.

“We won’t just focus on Truro but hope to make Truro a hub for Colchester County in terms of Pride.”

The society hopes to have a board of seven members, with sub-committees including representatives of other organizations and members of the community.

“We want to expand on what we’re able to offer and make things even more inclusive,” said Whiteland. “Truro is more diverse than people think it is, and we want things to be representative of everybody.”

The women say they’re pleased with the support they’ve received from Al Mcnutt, who organized Truro’s first Pride parade, Truro Police Chief Dave Mcneil, the Downtown Truro Partnership and the town.

“Having a society gives us more structure,” said Whiteland. “There’s a Pride expression once a year but it’s part of our everyday lives. We’re trying to change the narrative; Pride isn’t just for big cities.”

Applications for board members will be available on the Truro Pride Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ Pridetruro/

Anyone interested in being involved in other ways can contact the society through Facebook.

“We want to get input on what people want to see from Pride,” said Fisher. “We want people to share their ideas with us and help the community grow.”
