Bearcats hosting pair of weekend games

TRURO, N.S. – A loss to the Grand Falls Rapids left the Truro Bearcats with a weekend split during a Maritime Junior Hockey League road trip to New Brunswick last weekend.

The Bearcats were outscored 3-0 in the third period and suffered a 5-3 setback to the Rapids, a day after earning a huge 4-3 overtime win against the Edmundston Blizzard.

In the loss to the Rapids, Truro led 3-2 during the late stages of the contest, but surrendere­d three goals in the final three minutes to come up short.

Carson Lanceleve, on a powerplay, Ben Higgins and Spencer Blackwell – with his team-leading 14th goal – scored for Truro, while Matthew Mackay, with a pair, Nash Smith, Miguel Pare and Bobby Labelle, into an empty net, replied for the Rapids in front of a crowd of 876 at the

E. & P. Sénéchal Centre. Bearcats goaltender Alec Macdonald made 30 saves.

With the loss, Truro fell to 7-10-1-4 to sit in fifth place in the South Division, four points behind the fourthplac­e Amherst Ramblers.

In the win over Edmundston, G Blackmore scored the overtime winner at 3:55 of the extra session. Lanceleve, Luke Macmillan and Bryan Laureigh also scored for the Bearcats, while Brock Mcleod, with a pair, and Chrystophe­r Collin scored for the Blizzard, who hold down second place in the North Division with a 14-6-1-1 record.

Macdonald was the winning goaltender, stopping 31 shots in front of a whopping 2,700 fans Centre Jean Daigle.

This week, the Bearcats play a pair of home games. On Friday, they host the Ramblers, before a Saturday contest against the South Shore Lumberjack­s. Both games start at 7 p.m.

In other MHL news, the leaguelead­ing Summerside Western Capitals dropped three spots in the top-20 CJHL rankings despite a 12-game winning streak. The Capitals are ranked 12th in the nation and own a sparkling 20-3-0-0 record.
