‘Absolutely wonderful’

TRURO, N.S. – The Colchester Food Bank is ready to help folks in need this Christmas, supported by a generous, giving public.

As of Dec. 17, the food bank had 700 to 800 Christmas baskets of food to give clients. Each includes both regular groceries and the makings for a festive dinner.

“It’s absolutely wonderful,” said co-ordinator Darlene Deadder. “I’ve been with the food bank for 27 years and this community has always rallied up and kept our doors open to help people in need locally. It’s a very caring community.”

According to Deadder, the food bank assisted approximately 1,000 clients in December 2018. She said the number for this month will likely be similar or slightly higher.

She said increased need this year was due to the “economy, families, medical.” Major illnesses can put a severe strain on both personal and family finances.

However, Truro’s citizens have always provided both donations and a steady stream of volunteers. People helping out range from school children to members of Colchester Community Workshop.

“In the 27 years that I’ve been here, I’ve never had a day that I’ve never been able to offer someone something,” said Deadder.

Food bank board member Don Reid said serving clients from their new Prince Street building helps, as it gave “positive exposure” to the public.

“It’s a better atmosphere, provides easier access for helping the clients, everything feels better,” said Reid.

Anyone wishing to donate or sign up as a volunteer can do so in person at the food bank between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Mondays to Fridays.

Donors can give cash, nonperishable and perishable foods.

The last day for making a Christmas donation is Dec. 20, when the food bank will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. After that, the food bank will be closed until Jan. 6.

However, the food bank will be on call in case they are notified by the Christmas Index Program of clients in need of food.

Aside from Christmas, regular times for clients needing food are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Colchester Food Bank is located at 580 Prince St. in Truro.
