Christmas at the Café sharing festive spirit and dinner
TRURO, N.S. – A free festive feast, along with a chance to socialize, is being offered in Truro this holiday season.
Christmas at the Café is being held at the Truro Farmers’ Market again this year.
“I’ve been helping with this for about five years,” said Rhonda France, a member of the dinner committee. “I was volunteering at the Truro Homeless Outreach shelter and saw the need in the community. The dinner is for people who might not be able to afford much, as well as those who have no family around and want to be with others, and anyone who wants to be there.”
Christmas at the Café is an idea Aaron Stevenson came up with several years ago. On Christmas day he offered a free meal at his cafe in Bible Hill. It drew international students, people who lived alone and those who wanted to be part of a community celebration.
The event has grown, and now draws about 200 people of all ages. Things are set up buffet style so diners can choose the foods they like. A few deliveries are made to people unable to get out, and food that’s left over is donated to Soul’s Harbour, Hub House or the Colchester Food Bank.
France’s partner, Kyle Olsen, also volunteers at the event.
“When she talked to me about it I agreed to help right away,” he said. “It gives you a warm feeling.”
The couple celebrates Christmas at home on another day.
This is the second year Soul’s Harbour Rescue Mission has taken part in staging the dinner.
“It’s wonderful to provide people with an opportunity to come together and helping with this gives you the opportunity to see what Christmas is all about,” said Cherry Laxton, volunteer co-ordinator with Soul’s Harbour. “It refuels you, boosts your spirit and energy.”
Live music adds to the festive atmosphere, with many community members sharing their talents.
Christmas at the Café takes place Dec. 25, from 2-7 p.m. at the Truro Farmers’ Market.
