TRURO, N.S. – Truro Farmers’ Market will soon allow shoppers able to purchase goods online.

Farmers’ Markets of Nova Scotia (FMNS) released a statement on March 18, directing all market in the province to shift their efforts to operating online in light of the forced cancellations related to COVID-19.

“Things will be ordered and paid for online to limit social contact,” said Margaret Ells Congdon, manager of the Truro Farmers’ Market. “They will then be able to come in and pick things up on Saturdays. We’re not sure exactly what the model will be yet, whether people will come inside to get things or be met outside.”

Attempts will be made to accommodate anyone unable to pay online and Congdon said pickups will be organized to allow for social distancing.

“We’ll miss the whole social aspect of the market, but as soon as we can reopen safely, we will. For now, we want to make sure people can access local produce and support the vendors.”

FMNS has partnered with Local Food Marketplace, an online marketplace software program that is already being used by the Wolfville Farmers’ Market, and the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture has provided FMNS with $30,000 to help with the transition.

Other markets offering online ordering will be Wolfville Farmers’ Market, Halifax Brewery Farmers’ Market, New Glasgow Farmers’ Market, Lunenburg Farmers’ Market, Cape Breton Farmers’ Market, Annapolis Royal Farmers’ and Traders’ Market, Annapolis Royal Winter Farmers’ Market, New Digby Farmers’ Market and Yarmouth Farmers’ Market.

Truro’s online market is expected to be ready for people to order for March 28 pickup. Updates will be available on the Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/trurofarmersmarket/ and the website at http://www.trurofarmersmarket.org
