TRURO, N.S. – With the threat of COVID-19 closing most public places, finding a warm spot to spend the day can be difficult for the homeless. First Baptist Church has stepped up to provide a safe space and a lunch for those in need.

“We started by providing a place for people to come and get coffee early in the morning but, as things began to close, it became very obvious that more than a couple of hours in the morning was necessary,” said Rev. Ruth Tonn. “Places for these community members to sit and get warm, and be part of the community were getting fewer and fewer.”

On Monday, March 16, the church began offering shelter for most of the day, beginning at 7 a.m. They take in a small number of people so everyone can be spread out, and they provide coffee and a lunch.

People can do crossword puzzles, watch films and chat with one another.

Volunteers help Tonn and Rev. Paul Worden keep things running smoothly.

“We take our responsibility to the downtown people very seriously and we’ve been partnering with Hub House for various things for a while,” said Tonn. “This is what being a church is all about. God calls on us to love our neighbour and we have some neighbours who are very vulnerable.

“I encourage everyone to check on neighbours and friends and be as kind as you can.”

Donations of gift cards, food, coffee and personal hygiene items are appreciated. Tax receipts can be provided for financial donations. Anyone wishing to drop something off can contact the church at 902-893-4241.
