Still honouring Terry
Windsor preparing for 2016 Terry Fox Run
Although 36 years have passed since Terry Fox set out on his Marathon of Hope, his story and spirit never lose their power to inspire.
The Windsor Terry Fox Run continues to grow in number and support. Donations last year totaled over $16,000, placing Windsor third out of 70 provincial run sites across Nova Scotia.
This year, the hope is to meet or beat this result.
The Terry Fox story is one of courage and hope. At the age of 18, he was diagnosed with bone cancer and his right leg was amputated above his knee. Determined to help so many other young victims of the disease, Terry decided to run across Canada to raise funds for cancer research. He began his Marathon of Hope in 1980 but never personally completed his journey. Although he died one month before his 23rd birthday, his relentless spirit of hope lives on.
Now participants from 53 countries around the world run, walk, or cycle in his name to support cancer research, and over $500 million has been raised for this cause.
The Windsor Terry Fox Run is a family event and participants walk, run, or cycle the five- kilometer route, which weaves its way through town beginning and ending on the King’s-Edgehill School campus. There is no registration fee and no minimal donation required. Unlike many charitable organizations, over 85 per cent of all monies raised go directly to re- search for all types of cancer. If you have never taken part, this is your year to get involved.
Personal pledge sheets are currently available online at www. terryfox. org or at all Windsor banks. Donations can also be made at the registration desk on the day of the event.
Registration on Sept. 18 begins at 10 a.m. on Jakeman Field with the official event beginning at 11 a.m. T-shirts commemorating this year’s event ($20/ each) are currently on sale at King’s-Edgehill School.
A barbecue will follow for all participants.
