North Kentville man nets conditiona­l discharge for mischief

A North Kentville man has been sentenced for committing mischief by wilfully burning a motor vehicle.

Charges of arson and possessing gasoline for the purpose of committing arson have been withdrawn.

Merlin Randolf McInnis, 64, pleaded guilty to the mischief charge in October 2016. The matter was adjourned to April 13 to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.

Judge Jean Whalen handed McInnis a conditiona­l discharge with 12 months of probation, including restitutio­n of $1,806.02 payable through the court to the victim. McInnis was also fined $200 in victim surcharges.

McInnis committed the offence in North Kentville on June 18, 2016.

David George Draginda, 34, of Canning, has been fined for failing to comply with an order made under the Sex Offender Informatio­n Registrati­on Act. He failed to report to a registrati­on centre within the specified timeframe.

Draginda pleaded guilty to the charge April 11. Judge Jean Whalen fined him $ 650.

Draginda committed the offence in New Minas between July 12, 2016, and Jan. 11, 2017. Draginda failed to comply with an order made in the Superior Court of Ontario in Brampton on April 8, 2008, requiring him to report to a registrati­on centre referred to in the Sex Offender Informatio­n Registrati­on Act for a period of 20 years.

Draginda failed to report to a registrati­on centre between 11 months and one year after he last reported to a registrati­on centre.

MacBride committed the offences in Centrevill­e on Dec. 22, 2016. The legal blood alcohol limit is 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. MacBride gave breathalys­er readings of 120 and 120.

A charge of having care or control of a motor vehicle while his ability to operate a vehicle was impaired by alcohol or a drug was withdrawn on April 11.

Hayley Victoria Dawn Cogswell, 24, of Cambridge, Kings County, has been fined for operating a motor vehicle while her blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit.

Cogswell pleaded guilty to the charge on April 11. Judge Jean Whalen fined her $ 1,560 and imposed a one- year driving prohibitio­n for the Jan. 22 offence in New Minas. Cogswell gave breathalys­er readings of 130 and 130.

Meanwhile, Marsha May Finley, 31, of New Minas, was fined $ 1,560 and banned from driving for one year for having care or control of a motor vehicle while her blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit.

Finley pleaded guilty to the charge on April 11. She committed the offence in Grafton on Feb. 4. The legal blood alcohol limit is 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. Finley gave breathalys­er readings of 110 and 110. charge on April 11. Judge Jean Whalen fined Riley $ 1,400 and imposed a one- year driving prohibitio­n.

Riley committed the offence in New Minas on Nov. 27, 2016. Charges of having care or control of a motor vehicle while his ability to operate a vehicle was impaired by alcohol or a drug and illegal possession of liquor were withdrawn on April 11.

Robert James Johnstone, 34, of Kentville, was handed a suspended sentence with probation for uttering a threat to cause bodily harm.

Johnstone pleaded guilty to the charge on April 11. He was handed a suspended sentence with eight months of probation and was fined $ 100 in victim surcharges.

Johnstone committed the offence in Kentville on Dec. 30, 2016. A charge of causing a disturbanc­e in a public place was withdrawn on April 11.

Jasmine Dawn Schofield, 23, of Upper Granville, has been fined for failing to give her name, address, vehicle registrati­on number and driver’s licence number to the owner or person who had control over an unattended vehicle damaged in an accident; and for operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s licence.

Schofield pleaded guilty to the charges on April 11. Judge Jean Whalen fined her $ 410 for failing to provide her informatio­n and $ 295 for driving without a licence.

Schofield committed the offences in North Kentville on Dec. 23, 2016.
