From Sea to Shore

- BY KATHY JOHNSON Kingscountynews.ca centreville

It’s shaping up to be another full house for the 2017 Sea to Shore Sea Glass Festival, being held this year at the Centerville Community Hall in Kings County on July 22 and 23.

This marks the third year for the festival and the first time it has been held in Centreville, said organizer Michelle Fahie Davidson, owner/operator of Ocean Zn & Home Décor. Last year’s festival attracted “ocean inspired artists” from all over Nova Scotia, as well as a few from New Brunswick and P.E.I.

“I expect a full house again this year,” said Fahie Davidson.

Sea glass jewelry, sea glass art, beach rock art, driftwood creations, small and large mosaics, paintings and photography are among the artistic works the festival attracts.

“It’s so neat,” said Fahie Davidson. “Everyone has the same ocean inspired focus but they all do totally different things.”

The festival is “not just a craft fair,” said Fahie Davidson.

A bottle expert will be on hand who will be able to inform festival goers about their sea glass finds. There will also be contests and prizes, beach find displays, music, face painting, and of course food, including a “smoking deal” on seafood chowder. The British fish and chip truck will also be on site.

Last year, the sea glass festival attracted people from as far away as California. “They came to Nova Scotia just for the festival,” said Fahie Davidson, and had plans to return this year.

Fahie Davidson was inspired to start the festival after attending an out-of-province sea glass festival a number of years ago.

“I thought Nova Scotia should have its own sea glass festival,” she said. “We’re surrounded by water and have lots of sea glass” from the thousands of shipwrecks that dot the coastline.

Fahie Davidson spends the winter organizing the event and is helped by family members with staging the event. Admission to the festival is free, making it accessible for everyone who wants to stop in. A free will offering will be accepted to help cover costs.
