Canada jumped out in front of New Zealand 9-2 but torrential rain caused a two-hour delay in finishing the game. The teams were told to take the field again in less than superior conditions.

“This really took the wind out of our sails,” said Schofield, as New Zealand roared back for a 12-11 victory.

Schofield threw one-third of an inning in the New Zealand game and gave up five runs, five hits, four walks and two passed balls.

Team Canada then played Australia, with the winner to play New Zealand again for the gold medal. Australia scored three runs in the second and four runs in the fifth for a 7-3 win.

Team Canada had to settle for a bronze medal. New Zealand defeated Australia 6-4 to claim the gold medal.

The White Rock Rockies and pitcher Justin Schofield seemingly had things under control for the first four innings in Game 1 of the July 20 doubleheader in St. Croix.

He struck out eight and walked only one batter until the fifth inning, when Schofield told the Valley Journal-Advertiser that his body may still be on Yukon time, as he began to struggle on the pitching mound. Schofield recently returned from the World Softball Championships.

The Nova Scotia Canada Games team struck for five runs on three hits and a critical error by Rockies catcher Aaron Harvey, who threw the ball down the left field line to try to get a runner at third base.

The Rockies picked up offensive momentum but couldn’t tie the game at the conclusion of the seventh inning.

In the second game, both teams left the bases loaded in the first inning with only the Nova Scotia Canada Games team garnering a run to take a 1-0 lead.

The teams were tied 2-2 after four innings with the Canada Games

With the pair of losses, the White Rock Rockies fell to 5-13 on the season, while the Nova Scotia Canada Games team improved to 10-10.

Atlantic Heating Charros and Halifax Pepperjacks remain tied for first place at 19-4 with Brookfield nipping at their heels.

The Rockies now head out on an eight-game road trip and will not be back in St. Croix until Aug. 24.
