Remember to move over

- BY CAROLE MORRIS- UNDERHILL WWW. HANTSJOURNAL. CA

A man was transported to the Hants Community Hospital with non life- threatening injuries following a single vehicle car accident July 25.

Hantsport’s deputy fire chief Paul Maynard said the rollover occurred on Highway 101 at Exit 8A, the Ben Jackson Road, around 6: 50 a. m. The cause of the crash was initially unknown but Maynard said road conditions were wet and it was raining hard. The driver was the lone occupant of the vehicle.

Two units from the Hantsport Fire Department responded to the call, as did paramedics and the RCMP.

Maynard said motorists need to remember that it is the law to slow down and move over when first responders are attending an accident scene. He said some drivers are not doing so and it’s putting emergency workers at risk of injury.

At the “last two accidents, the majority of the drivers are not adhering to the law,” he said, noting firefighters have witnessed people driving by at regular highway speeds within feet of where they’re working.

The ‘ Move Over’ law, for- mally called the Act to Increase Safety for First Responders and Others, came into effect on May 1, 2010. In Nova Scotia, it is illegal to travel in excess of 60 kilometres per hour on the highway when passing a stopped emergency vehicle when its emergency lights are on. It’s also required to change lanes if travelling on a twolane road highway, if it’s safe to do so. Fines can range from $352.50 to $2,442.50.
