This year’s Port Williams Volunteer Fire Department open house on Oct. 15 featured two new activities for the children: a maze and a movie.
Joining the interactivity helping a firefighter put out a “house fire,” was a maze that went under a grouping of tables requiring the kids to hold on to a fire hose to help them find their way through. The firefighters also showed kids their gear and fire trucks.
In the meeting room, kids could watch Sparky’s ABCs of Fire Safety movie and take the fire safety pup quiz. There were activity sheets to do, a Sparky colouring book, a craft of a Dalmatian with a bone in a doghouse and storybooks about firefighters. And, of course, Sparky the fire dog was in attendance to interact with the kids and give hugs.
The large and delicious cake featured this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme ‘Every Second Counts: Two Ways Out’ that stresses the importance of families planning two routes out of their house in case of fire. More information about the PWVFD can be found on their Facebook page and additional photos of the afternoon can be seen in the Village Photo Gallery.
The Village is holding its annual Remembrance Day Observance on Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Veterans’ Memorial. The service will be conducted by the ministers of two churches. Participating in the observance will be the Nova Scotia RCMP Pipes and Drums, the PWES/Glooscap choir, members of the Atlantic Canadian Military Association, and members of the Canning Legion Branch No. 73. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony in the auditorium.
The PWHA’s coffee party and display will be held at the Baptist Church on Nov. 4 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. This year’s themed display is Angels, Choristers and Carolers This young firefighter gets ready to follow his teammate into the maze where holding tight to the firehose will see them safely through the dark. This new activity was just one of many available to the children who attended the Port Williams Volunteer Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Week Open House on Oct. 15.
