On top of the standings

Coach proud of Acadia Axewomen as the team takes over first place

-

For the first time in Acadia women’s basketball program history, the Axewomen sit on top of the U SPORTS Top Ten ranking of women’s university basketball at the number one position.

Collecting 29 of the possible 47 No. 1 position votes, the Axewomen remain undefeated with a 6-0 record — one of three schools without a loss. Only Carleton and Saskatchewan are undefeated as well.

Ranked second for the last two weeks, the Axewomen jumped to the No. 1 position after the No. 1 Regina Cougars’ loss to UNBC this past weekend.

The top ranking is a first for the Axewomen basketball program.

“I think it’s neat for sure, and nice validation for our players and support staff who have worked so hard the past few years. Playing the teams we did in the preseason really gave us a taste of what we need to do consistently to be among the top programs in the country. It’s special to get the recognition for sure, but our sights are still set squarely on this weekend in Charlottetown versus a tough UPEI team to finish our first semester of play,” said head coach Len Harvey after hearing about the top ranking of his Axewomen.

In preseason play, the Axewomen posted an 8-1 record, losing only to the Regina Cougars at the Calgary Cup in early October. Acadia picked up wins against Top Ten teams Laval (twice) and Queen’s.

The Axewomen were set to wrap up the first semester with a road trip to the Island when they take on the scrappy UPEI Panthers on Nov. 25 starting at 6 p.m. on AUStv.ca.
