Painting Workshop

There’s a painting workshop with artist Justine Kerr on Jan. 6 & 7, Bear River Artworks Gallery at Oakdene Center, 1939 Clementsva­le Road. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Lunch is included. $235.

Farmers Market Music

Malia Rogers will perform at the Wolfville Farmers Market Jan. Ralf said.

Ralf, who started playing chess when he was in school, taught Jonas his first moves after Jonas expressed an interest around age 9. While living in Switzerlan­d, 6 from fr 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in the DeWolfe Building.

On Jan. 13, Tripod will perform. Ken Voita will take the stage on Jan. 20, and Sam Wilson will round out the musical offerings in January with a show on Jan. 27.

Film screenings

Fundy Cinema screens Lucky. Actor John Carroll Lynch’s moving directoria­l debut follows the spiritual journey of a fiercely independen­t 90- year- old atheist, portrayed by Harry Dean Stanton in his final role, and the quirky characters that inhabit his off the map desert Arizona hometown.

Lucky will be shown Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., at Al Whittle Theatre, 450 Main St., Wolfville. Tickets are $9 and are available 30 minutes before screening.

Documentar­y Film

The documentar­y film Human Flow will be shown at King’s Theatre in Annapolis Royal Jan. 8 from 7-9 p.m. It’s part of the theatre’s Reel Art Series 2018. Human Flow is an epic film journey led by the internatio­nally renowned artist Ai Weiwei. It gives a powerful visual expression to this massive human migration. Live At King’s Theatre

King’s Theatre in Annapolis Royal has some great events ahead for the new year, according to general manager Janet Larkman. She notes that tickets are on sale now for three great events.

• First up is Dave Gunning and James Keelaghan at King’s Theatre on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. The pair are much-loved Juno and ECMA winning folk/roots artists.

• The new year continues in style with Susan Aglukark on Sunday, regards to mathematic­s.

“It gives you spatial thinking as well,” Jonas said. “If you do it long enough, you can make a picture of it basically and move the pieces and see ahead, calculate what’s going to happen.”

Ralf said he plays more of an intuitive game while Jonas tends to apply more of a strategic style.

“I love to play too but I can only defeat him (Jonas) when he’s tired,” Ralf said. “Otherwise, I’m more a sparring partner.”

Jonas said he enjoys math and has fun exploring and mastering the strategy and tactics of chess. In Switzerlan­d, he won the equivalent of provincial­s in 2012. Last year, he won provincial­s here and went to the scholastic nationals in Toronto, Ontario, in May. He also competed in an open national tournament in Sault Ste. Marie,

Centre Stage has Drinking Habits

Who says January can be long and boring? Not the nuns at Sisters of Perpetual Sewing.

Drinking Habits by Tom Smith will make you forget the cold of winter with this laugh-out loud farce. Two nuns have been secretly making wine to keep the convent’s doors open, but Paul and Sally, reporters and former fiancées, are hot on their trail. Can the convent be saved? Come to CentreStag­e and find out.

Drinking Habits is directed by Wayne and Linda Marriott. The cast in order of appearance includes: Chantal Murphy, Carolyn Landry, Bob Cook, Mindy Vinqvist-Tymchuk, Darrell Doucette, Janet Westhaver, Heidi Price, and Leroy Heffernan. The featured artist is Carole Ball.

The dates are Jan. 5-6, Jan. 1213, Jan. 14 matinee, Jan. 19-20, Jan. 26-27, Jan. 28 matinee, Feb. 2-3, Feb. 4 matinee, Feb. 9-10. Front of House opens at 6:45 p.m. for the evening performanc­es and 1:15 p.m. for the matinees.

Ralf said local businesses have been very supportive in terms of donating items for tournament prizes. Chess shops from as far away as Toronto have been sending books and other items. Money from registrati­on fees will be invested in chessboard­s and clocks for the new club.

Next summer, players will be at the Wolfville Farmers Market on Wednesday evenings with demonstrat­ions and other initiative­s to help promote the club.

Jonas said it feels really good to have so much support as he, his father and others work to re-establish organized chess in Kings County.

Deep Roots Music AGM

The committee behind the successful Deep Roots Music Festival will host its annual general meeting from 2-4 p.m. on Jan. 21 at the Wolfville Farmers Market in the DeWolfe Building (24 Elm Ave.). The general public is welcome to attend but only voting members may participat­e. Symphony Nova Scotia visiting Wolfville

Symphony Nova Scotia once again salutes the world’s most iconic composer. Experience a delightful range of Mozart’s most famous works, beginning with the ambitious, inventive “Haffner” Symphony. Then, hear the gracious and intimate Piano Concerto no. 23, performed by Italian rising star Luca Buratto, a pianist of “fiery imaginatio­n and finesse” (Musical America) and last year’s winner of the prestigiou­s Honens Piano Competitio­n. And for the grand finale, the orchestra performs one of Mozart’s great last works — the beautiful Symphony no. 39. The conductor is Bernhard Gueller. The show, at Acadia University’s Convocatio­n Hall is at 7:30 p.m Jan. 27. The cost is $34 for adults; $22 for students.
