Avon View students help less fortunate with coat drive

- The Avon View Voice Sare Yorukoglu is an international student at Avon View who writes this column to improve her English.

Since the beginning of December, Santa knocked on AV’s doors and we were all anxiously waiting for Christmas. Thanks to the student council, students had a joyful school month with many Christmas themes and celebrations.

On Dec. 14, we held a dance. Students received a reduction in the price of the dance with a food bank donation. There were opportunities for holiday photos and festive treats were also available.

The seasonal cold weather has finally arrived and cozy sweaters and snowsuits have taken their place in everyone’s wardrobes. Unfortunately, each year some kids cannot go to school because of the hard winter weather conditions. In an effort to help out, students at our school collected two carloads of winter clothes to donate to those in need. These items were distributed through a project that allowed those in need to select necessary winter clothing. The contributions that our school made will help these kids and their families to have a warm hearth and home this winter.

The AV girls’ hockey team were set to take part in the Peter Connell Memorial Tournament in Berwick at the Apple Dome at the end of December.

AV students from the WE Act club are participating in several events by volunteering for global and local initiations. The purpose is to make positive changes in our community and also on an international platform.

During school hours, you can see the WE Act club members selling cupcakes, tickets for draws and giving out candy canes for a dollar. All of the money that they are earning will go toward helping Ecuador and Sierra Leone kids gain an education. Students who donate are helping people in their own neighborhood and across the world.

The Christmas break is a really nice time to sleep more inside our warm beds. However, don›t forget — exams are on the way. The exam schedule is available on our website. You should check it out before it›s too late. Time is of the essence.

The first school day after the Christmas break is Jan. 3. Also, the student progress reports will be out on Jan. 15.
