New semester, new opportunities

- The Avon View Voice Sare Yorukoglu is an international student at Avon View who is working on perfecting her English language skills.

A new semester began within fresh classes for students and teachers on Feb. 6.

After intensive exams, students had a chance to have a little break. Now, they can see the final marks of the first semester classes on their report cards. Don’t forget to check them out if you haven’t yet.

We had a course fair on Feb. 15, and Mr. MacPherson spoke about changes in the system and what type of credits students need to graduate. The decisions that students make about course selections are important and will impact their future. Students can make an appointment with student services to get more information and assistance with their choices. If you have questions about the courses that your son or daughter chooses, call the student services department (902-792-6740). The registration form for next year’s courses should be filled out by the first week of March.

Love is in the air! Avon View’s cheerleading club brought Valentines together with delicious candy grams and cupcake sales. People shared the sweetest messages of love on Valentine’s Day.

Hockey season had been busy with tournaments and victories for Avon View boys’ junior varsity and senior varsity teams. The junior varsity hockey team beat Horton in finals and took first place in the districts tournament. They will be hosting a regional tournament this weekend for top teams in NS Western.

Also, the senior varsity team had a great trip to Newfoundland. They will have two away games this weekend, and a game versus Park View on March 2 at 3 p.m. Let’s support our teams together with a vibrant voice! Students interested in playing table tennis now have access to the Ping Pong Club, a new club that welcomes all students. Practices are every Thursday after school for one hour, and selected weekdays at the quiet bell.

There are a couple fun student council sponsored events coming up in March. The St. Patrick’s Day dance is going to be on March 1. Stop by and you are sure to see a sea of green. There was a safe grad parent meeting on Feb. 26. We’re looking for some volunteers to participate in this event. If you are interested or want to get more information, you can contact Mr. Morrison (room 223).
