The Avon View Avalanche’s girls’ hockey team have their sights set on provincials.

The team will represent Western Nova Scotia when they host the High School Girls NSSAF Division 1 Hockey Championship Tournament in Newport March 23-25.

As host, the Avalanche were already guaranteed a spot, but they wanted to win the proper way and that is exactly what happened March 2 at the Hants Exhibition Arena.

The Avalanche edged the Parkview Lady Panthers 2-1 to secure the Western Region Division 1 banner.

The Avalanche finished the regular season with a perfect 180-0 record.

The regional final on March 2 was an intense affair. Avon View led 1-0 after the first period on a slap shot from the point by Maddy Singer, which Savannah Hartt deflected into the net.

In the second period, just as an Avon View’s penalty was ending, the Panthers tied the game 1-1. Before the second period ended, Hartt was alone in front of the Parkview net when the goalie bobbled the puck after making an initial save and it was just enough as Hartt picked up the rebound and shoved it home for the winning goal.

No scoring took place in the third period.

Avon View played West Kings March 5 in an exhibition game where they honoured their graduating players.

Another exhibition game, this one against Lockview High School, is in the works prior to the provincials.

Parkview, which advanced to the Western Division 1 final after defeating Horton 5-0, may still have a chance at a berth in the provincials. They could come in as the eighth seed if they can defeat a talented Auburn team in a one-game showdown. The winner of that game will receive the final provincial berth. The Avon View Avalanche’s girls’ hockey team has plenty of reasons to smile. Not only did they record a perfect season, they won the regional banner after a hard-fought game March 2.
