Riverview Skating Club showcases talent with Tangled On Ice
Allison Power, 18, a graduating skater with Riverview Skating Club, played Rapunzel in the Riverview Skating Club’s Tangled On Ice, the end of year showcase.
It was bittersweet for Power, who is moving on from the club as a member.
“I heard back from people in the audience that had watched me and other skaters from over the years and they said this is the best ice show they watched,” Power said. “That felt great, because I was extra nervous to go out in front of all of those people than previous ice shows. I think that’s because it was my final performance with them.”
Power has been with the club for 15 years, longer than she’s been in school.
“I just enjoy skating, and the people I skate with,” she said. “They kept me involved for so long. It’s just a bunch of great people, and the feeling of being on the ice.”
Power plans to join an adult synchronized skating team after high school and wants to return to the GFL Recreation Centre in Newport to help out with the CanSkate program, assisting younger skaters.
Monica Sweetapple said the club’s end- of- year showcase, Tangled On Ice, was sold out, with many spectators having to stand.
“This is really to demonstrate just how far our skaters have come along,” Sweetapple said. “We have a lot of support from our parents and our sponsors that make this happen.”
Sweetapple said the showcase has been a staple of the Riverview Skating Club as long as it has existed — more than 40 years.
The showcase featured a couple of visiting synchronized skating teams, including Revolution from Kentville and another from St. Margaret’s Bay.
