‘We should be supporting one another, all sports’
Slo-pitch fundraising tournament a win for Windsor Royals
In 30-plus degree weather, it was almost hard to imagine that a slo-pitch game at the St. Croix Ball Field would eventually help Windsor’s junior C hockey team hit the ice later this year.
But that’s exactly where the money raised will go.
Angie Connors, organizer of the Windsor Royals Coed SloPitch tournament and board member of the rebranded junior C hockey team, said two charity softball tournaments have been held for the team, both bringing in big numbers.
“We appreciate all of the support we’ve been getting,” Connors said. “Funding like this is more is more important than ever.”
Connors said the committee has received a lot of positive feedback from the community since the junior C team’s recent rebranding from the Avon River Rats to the Windsor Royals.
“Hopefully, that excitement shows on the ice this season,” she said.
Twelve teams from across the region participated in the tournament.
Nick Ballard of the winning Co Stros team, made up of players from across the Halifax area, said the team was happy to come out and play.
It was the third tournament for the Co Stros, which had a 2-1 record leading up to the championships.
The team defeated the Avondale Black Bears.
The secret sauce to their success?
“We all like each other,” Ballard said. “We all go make plays for each other. Nobody carries the team. We should be supporting one another, all sports.”
