Camper trailer goes off of Highway 101 near Hantsport

Around 11 a.m. on Oct. 4, a pickup truck hauling a camper-trailer left Highway 101 and ended up in a field a short distance from the busy thoroughfare.

The camper-trailer, laying on its side, suffered extensive damage, with its bottom half hanging open. The guardrail was bent from the impact.

The accident occurred near the Freddie Wilson overpass. One lane of traffic on the side heading towards Windsor/Halifax was blocked to traffic as emergency personnel attended the scene.

Cpl. Jennifer Clarke, media relations officer with the RCMP, said the truck ended up in the ditch after a strong gust of wind pulled the trailer.

She said the truck was still driveable, however the trailer was demolished.

Peter Johnston, chief of the Hantsport fire department, said the biggest challenge dealing with the scene was commuters.

“Everybody needs to learn the law — to pull over safely and drop to 60 kilometres an hour,” Johnston said.

Johnston said the pickup truck stayed on all four wheels during the incident.

The two occupants in the truck were not hurt. However, an ambulance was called to the scene as a precaution.

No charges are pending.
