Walton man sentenced to federal time for drug and weapons offences

A Walton man has been handed a federal sentence after changing his pleas to guilty on several drug and weapons-related offences.

Travis Jeffery Wilcox, 27, was present in Windsor provincial court on Oct. 1, when he changed his pleas to guilty on eight charges, seven of which he was charged with individually and one of which he was charged with along with a co-accused.

The seven counts he was charged with individually that he entered guilty pleas to included unlawfully possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking; unlawfully possessing methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking, unlawfully possessing cannabis marijuana, unlawfully possessing cannabis resin, unlawfully possessing hydromorphone, carrying a weapon — a black .22 calibre pellet gun — for a purpose dangerous to the public peace and possessing a prohibited weapon — brass knuckles — without being the holder of a licence under which he may possess them.

Judge Christopher Manning sentenced Wilcox to a total of two years in federal custody on the seven charges, to be followed by 18 months of probation. The court granted a 10-year firearm prohibition against Wilcox in relation to the charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, to be imposed following his release from custody.

The court granted a secondary DNA order and granted forfeiture orders for offencerelated property in relation to the possession for the purpose of trafficking charges. Wilcox committed the offences in Mantua on Feb. 1.

A charge of refusing to comply with a demand made to him by a police officer to accompany the officer for the purpose of an evaluation to determine whether Wilcox’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by a drug or by a combination of alcohol and a drug was dismissed without penalty on Oct. 1. It had been alleged that Wilcox committed this offence in Mantua on Feb. 1.

Wilcox also changed his plea to guilty to a charge of unlawfully possessing methamphetamine. He was charged jointly on this count with Samantha McLellan, 25, of Windsor. The charge against McLellan was dismissed without penalty on Oct. 1, with the Crown offering no evidence. Manning sentenced Wilcox to 30 days in custody followed by 18 months of probation, to be served concurrently, on this charge. Wilcox committed this offence in Walton on May 19.
