A 23-year-old university student was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries Nov. 27 after being hit by a vehicle near the corner of University Avenue and Main Street.

“She was transported with very serious injuries and she’s at the Queen Elizabeth II in Halifax. We’re unable to comment on her medical condition at this time,” said Kings District RCMP spokesperson Const. Jeff Wilson in an interview Nov. 28.

Wilson confirmed that the woman is a student at Acadia University, and the collision occurred in a marked crosswalk near the school’s athletic complex at 5:03 p.m.

A provincial media release circulated by the RCMP says paramedics transported the injured pedestrian to Valley Regional Hospital from the scene and then EHS LifeFlight was called to transfer her to Halifax.

RCMP officers and collision analysts gathered information to determine the cause of the collision.

“It was a bit after 5 p.m. and it was a dark night with some drizzle and I think that those could possibly be contributing factors when visibility is limited,” said Wilson, noting at the time of the interview they were still in the “early stages of the investigation.”

Acadia University spokesperson Scott Roberts said a range of counselling services are available for anyone in need of support at this difficult time.

“I am aware that contact was made last evening with several members of our community who might be in need of support,” said Roberts in an email Nov. 28.

“In addition, a message was sent to campus today by our president, in which he reminded everyone of the counselling services and directed them to our website as the quickest way to find out about the range of 24/7 services available.”
