Coun. Randy Hussey brought forward a motion to have council write a letter to the provincial Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal to investigate what can be done to make Underwood Road in Garlands Crossing safer for residents.

“I’ve been approached numerous times about traffic calming on Underwood Road,” said Hussey, noting that the roadway was initially built to accommodate traffic for 20-30 homes. There’s now upwards of 200 homes, as Underwood Road connects to The Crossing retirement and senior-lifestyle community.

Hussey wanted the province to investigate reducing the speed limit on Underwood Road to 30 kilometres per hour for safety reasons.

“There are numerous children there now and the snow clearing is lacking. It is a provincial road and they get to it when they get to it,” he said.

“Also due to the traffic, the road is in a terrible shape and should be brought up to a better standard. Because the road is narrow, most vehicles travel down the middle so I’d like to see a yellow line down the middle.”

Council unanimously agreed to have staff pen a letter to the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal and request they consider traffic calming measures to ensure the safety of the motoring public and the residents that live there.
