The 4-3-1 Barrington High School Barons played hard against the Avon View Avalanche for 40 minutes Jan. 5 in Windsor as the two teams were tied at 1-1 and 2-2 after the first and second periods.

In the final period, the Avalanche understood that work still had to be done and Hayden Burgess scored the game winner on the power-play. He collected two assists on the night, playing a superb game of hockey.

Matthew Benedict and Blake Rogers scored into an empty net to salt the game away for the Avalanche. Ethan Salsman and Dan Lord scored goals in the first two periods for the Avalanche.

It was a heavy hitting game with Will Caines and Jack Sheehan handing out, without a doubt, the hardest hits of the bout.

Prior to collecting their ninth win of the season and tying Parkview for first place in the Eastern Division in the Valley High School Boys Hockey League, Avon View recorded their eighth win of the season in Berwick Jan. 4.

Central Kings and Avon View squared off in a spirited game. The Gators came out strong in the first period, outshooting the Avalanche 13-10. But strong goaltending by Joe MacDonald was able to limit the damage to one, when CK’s Jarrett Phinney scored on the power-play with 40 seconds to go in the first period to give the Gators a 1-0 lead.

The second period was all about the Avalanche as they fired 23 shots at the Gators’ Josh Langille, who made some spectacular saves. But Avon View led the period with a goal by Donnie Davidson. Avon View struck again on the power-play, with Salsman scoring. Just three minutes later, the Avalanche added their third goal of the period from Ryan Coleski to take a 3-1 lead into the final period.

The third period saw the Gators push for a tie, but MacDonald turned them away time and again. There was no scoring in a penalty-filled third as the Avalanche held on for the 3-1 victory.
