FIVE THINGS FROM SUNDAY’S SCRIMMAGE

-

1 The good and the bad of Jordan Subban was apparent. The dynamic defenceman wheeled the puck up ice before dishing to a teammate on several rushes, but also gave it away in his own zone a couple of times on risky plays. He doesn’t look like coach Willie Desjardins’ type of player.

2 Among the three NHL veterans invited to camp on tryouts, all former top-10 draft picks, James Sheppard was less noticeable than Jack Skille and Tuomo Ruutu. Skille had a couple of flashy offensive moments and Ruutu was physical, crunching Subban on an early check.

3 Swedish League most valuable player Anton Rodin skated with Markus Granlund and Emerson Etem in the prospect-heavy scrimmage. The line was good, but not dominant. Coming back from major knee surgery, Rodin appeared to labour at times and was outskated by Brendan Gaunce on the winning goal.

4 The Whites beat the Blues 3-2 on Jayson Megna’s lucky goal during five minutes of three-on-three. Andrey Pedan had tied the game with a beautiful backhand deke on a breakaway when another defence hopeful, Nikita Tryamkin, was caught. Curtis Valk, Wacey Hamilton and Ashton Sautner were the other goal scorers.

5 Those in snowshoes need not apply. The scrimmage was played at an excellent pace, hash marks to hash marks, but lacked scoring chances as well as tenured Canucks. “It’s hard to believe how fast the game is played at now,” Desjardins said. “Your skill has to play hard. It has forced everybody to play at a quicker pace.”
