B.C. WINE OF THE WEEK

Culmina Family Estate Hypothesis 2013, Golden Mile Bench, Okanagan Valley $38 | 92/100

UPC: 827413000089

The latest 2013 Hypothesis from the Triggs family is a fine jump up in quality. The blend is 38/36/26 Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, all grown on the home Arise Bench. Hypothesis has shed its rusticity in 2013, even projecting early elegance despite a wealth of dense but sweet tannins in the finish. The oak regime is 60/40 new and one-year-old French barrels; the fruit is black and savoury but with an elegant, stony, mineral undercurrent. Age another five years for optimum quality, or serve now with pheasant, venison or beef. Super value.

WINE FOR THE CELLAR

Altesino Brunello di Montalcino 2011, Montalcino, Siena, Tuscany, Italy $54.99 | 92/100

UPC: 8016763011032

A warmer version of the great 2010, the 2011 is remarkably lively and fresh, offering floral notes and the elegance we come to expect from Altesino. The palate is equally refined and silky, mixing the classic terroir touches of earth and licorice before the cherries kick in. This is likely headed for midterm drinking, say 2020. Good value. The estate is spread over 89 hectares, 44 of which are planted and subdivided into four Altesino crus: Macina, Castelnuovo dell’Abate, Pianezzine and Montosoli.
