5 REASONS TO QUIVER
Robin Hood: Prince of Tease could have some audiences seeing (Will) Scarlet, Shawn Conner writes.
1 Or should that be Naughtingham?
Everyone (except the rich) loves a good stealing-from-the-rich story, right? This new production from Too Fly Productions (Miss Glitz) blends circus, burlesque and musical theatre, and reimagines the hero of Nottingham as a powerful, sensual woman. It gender-swaps the other roles, too.
2 Music
Prince of Tease incorporates hits from today’s stars like Rihanna, Sia and Lady Gaga, as well as hitmakers of yesteryear like Destiny’s Child and Steppenwolf (there’s two names you don’t see together often enough). Although some lyrics have been changed to fit the story, most are left untouched. All are sung live.
3 Maria Turner
As mentioned, Prince of Tease is part circus, too. One of the performers is Maria Turner, who is known for her talent on aerial silks.
4 Dawn Ewen
Ewen, the director and choreographer, has worked on a number of large-scale burlesque productions. As noted by Alan Pronger, who co-wrote the show with Mike Kovac, she “has a talent for getting people’s clothes off in increasingly creative ways.”
5 Emily Pangburn
The cast of many (at least 18) includes Pangburn, who plays the lead role and has performed in title roles in productions in the past, including Concrete Vertigo’s Vixens of Wonderland in 2015. Pronger again: “She combines a killer voice, an undeniable charisma and oozes sexuality when she dances.” Joseph Spitale, who plays Mann Marian (Robin’s love interest), is a veteran of national touring productions and recently completed an off-Broadway version of A Christmas Carol.
