Heritage homes open their doors
Shannon estate among highlights
Nine historic Vancouver residences will open their doors to the public on June 4 when the Vancouver Heritage Foundation holds its 15th annual Heritage House Tour.
Among the homes on the selfguided tour is Shannon, the restored west side estate of sugar magnate B.T. Rogers.
“Guests will have a rare chance to explore the elaborate principal rooms of the mansion with interior finishes restored using early photographs, as well as the Italian garden featuring work by prolific sculptor Charles Marega, and the converted gatehouse — a separate private residence,” says a foundation release detailing the event.
Tour-goers will also be able to step inside the recently restored Walter and Mary Chan House in Strathcona, a home that is still in their family.
“We are also highlighting the relationship between heritage and sustainability,” notes the release. “One home featured has been innovatively renovated with recycled rubber roof, high-efficiency systems and even a hive to help the local bee population.”
Prior to the event — on the evening of June 1 — the foundation is also presenting a lecture by conservation architect Mark Thompson Brandt, who will explore the “greening” of our heritage buildings, and how they will be an important part of sustainable cities.
Tickets for the tour, which runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., are $40 or $30 for students with valid student ID. Lecture tickets are $15 and $9 for students. All proceeds support the VHF’s educational programs and grants.
