Saving Summer

Stay Mid-Week or Extend Your Weekend

- PHILLIPA CAMPBELL

Summer has returned to Whistler, bringing warm weather and long, golden evenings. Between the mountains, the lakes and the village there are so many ways to spend those summer days that even Whistler locals find the weekends too short. Sea to Sky author and reformed weekend warrior Feet Banks understands the struggle. He writes, “I have a job. It’s a good job but it’s full-time, weekends off, and there’s no way to fit all the Whistler fun I want to have this summer into two days off per week.” The solution is simple—extend your weekend. Coming up mid-week or adding an extra day or two ensures you can fit in the adventures you want, plus the downtime you need—and at lower rates, too. Staying when the rest of the world is at work comes with many benefits, because all of Whistler’s summer activities are available during the quieter midweek times. Go sightseeing on the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola without lift lines, have your choice of times for photography walking tours, or canoe the River of Golden Dreams at leisure. Mid-week comes with extra perks in the village as well, including getting the best seats on the patio at lunchtime, not to mention cheaper rates on hotels. By avoiding travelling to Whistler at the weekend you can avoid sitting in traffic — a significant timesaving advantage. Your time is better used relaxing at the lake or spa or exploring new hiking and biking trails, rather than sitting in your car. Finally, by starting your weekend early or staying into the following week you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing your Thursday, Friday, Monday or Tuesday mornings will be spent on the mountain, rather than in meetings. Happy hour is better than rush hour and golf score-sheets are far better than spreadsheets, after all. Now is the time to seize the summer, before it slips away. Planning ahead comes with additional rewards, as threenight mid-week summer stays booked before June 30 come with a bonus $25 Whistler. com Adventure Credit, easily used towards an extra day or two of summer fun.
