Wine group rebrands, check out the stars
Similkameen Wineries Association is changing its brand identity and name, choosing the new moniker Similkameen Independent Winegrowers.
Once described as “one of the Top 5 wine regions you have never heard of,” its members felt it was time to tell a bigger story.
The new commitment is to respect and care for the land, and focus on ensuring the wines and ciders express the rare and special terroir. For more details go to similkameenwine.com.
If you are going to be in the south Okanagan on July 27, make a dinner reservation at Tinhorn Creek for Starlit Supper.
The 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. event includes a multicourse dinner by Miradoro paired with Tinhorn Creek wines while you watch the moon rise.
Royal Astronomical Society telescopes will be available for seeing the stars, weather permitting. The $125 ticket includes dinner, wine and gratuities. Tickets: tinhorn.com
B.C. WINE OF THE WEEK Clos du Soleil Fume Blanc 2016, British Columbia $20 | 89/100
UPC: 857088000862
This is an 88/12 Sauvignon Blanc/Sémillon from vineyards in both the Similkameen and Okanagan that spends a little time in oak. The Sémillon was whole-cluster pressed, while the Sauvignon Blanc spent a few hours on its skins before pressing. They were blended just before bottling. Linear and tight with nervy, grapefruit-laced acids. A solid food wine.
WINE FOR THE CELLAR Père Anselme La Fiole du Pape Châteauneuf-du-Pape N/V, Rhône Valley, France $39.99 | 89/100
UPC: 3217661012519
The Brotte family owns La Fiole, a label named after father Père Anselme since the 1950s and sold in the famous crooked neck bottle with a mix of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Mourvèdre. It has a bit more cooked or pruny notes on the nose and palate. The attack is spicy with black cherry, licorice root and prunes with a touch of chocolate. Best with grilled meats. Ready to drink or cellar over the next three to five years.
