SHOW & SHINES
Busy Saturday on weekend show sked
This weekend is one of those rare ones with lots of shows in Metro Vancouver on Saturday. And two of those are all-new events, both taking place on the North Shore: Lions Gate Hospital Cruise the Shore and Leah’s Auto & MotoConcept Show & Shine.
Last weekend my wife and I ventured up to Bob and Dan’s Car Show in North Van in the old truck and was surprised to see a massive traffic snarl at the Grandview Highway exit. We toughed it out and 45 minutes later we had driven the four or so miles to North Van. The show was absolutely worth it.
On Sunday, I headed out to the road course at Mission Raceway Park and the paddocks were filled to near capacity. Lots of Mazda RX-7s and Miatas and even the pace cars were Mazdas. I have read that on any given weekend, at SCCA events across the North America, you’ll find more Mazdas racing than every other manufacturer combined. The Miatas come basically one shape and one size, but so many different power levels.
But the highlight was Doug Yip’s Electric Cobra powered by Tesla Motors. I heard Doug retired from racing last year after 25 years racing a Sunbeam Tiger and was going to restore the Tiger back to street specs and go cruising.
Around lunchtime, I headed to the 60th anniversary BCHRA car show at Cloverdale. It was packed and lots of cars were placed all over downtown Cloverdale. So many cool cars to see and afterwards I got to photograph Dave Horton’s new Chevy Belair hot rod and three of the Biddlecombe brothers’ cool cars.
Standing around and walking on hard surfaces all day is hard work and as Keith Biddlecombe and I were shooting his amazing Cam Grant-built ’ 32 Ford, we commented on how stiff we are crouching to look in the viewfinder. I think there might be a market for Hot Rodders Yoga. Some suggested poses: Downward Facing Low Boy pose, Flying 1/4 Mile pose, Elephant Car Trunk pose, Lion’s Dragway pose and the ever popular Upward Facing Hi Boy Pose.
See you at the next car show, and don’t forget to take a kid, or a Yoga master, with you.
