Herschel shows off its wares at lemonade stand

Summer and lemonade go together like, well, the beach and sand, sunscreen and sunglasses, beers and ... well, you get the point.

So it makes sense the team behind the wildly popular accessories brand Herschel Supply would merge the two inspirations — sweet, tangy drinks and a perfectly timed July opening — for its first pop-up shop in Deep Cove.

“The Lemonade Stand is a 298-square-foot pop-up lemonade stand in the heart of Deep Cove’s main street selling exclusive Herschel Supply products and coldpressed lemonade by The Juice Truck,” Lyndon Cormack said.

(Just in case you’re not a backpack-toting millennial, or haven’t been in proximity to one for about, oh, the last six years or so, Herschel is a Vancouver-based brand started by Cormack and his brother and business partner Jamie in 2009. Since then, the company has expanded into more than 10,000 points of sale around the world and has been worn by about ... everyone.)

During the six-month pop-up shop, Cormack says shoppers can expect to find, “exclusive products and juices you can’t find anywhere else,” including four flavours of lemonade created in partnership with The Juice Truck: Plain, Strawberry, Charcoal and the slightly mysterious-sounding Blue Majik.

All profits from the sale of the lemonades will be donated to ArtStarts in Schools, a charitable organization that works to expand the role of arts education in B.C. schools.

In addition to providing a vehicle for philanthropy, the custom lemonades served as inspiration for the exclusive collection of Herschel Supply products available within the shop.

“We took the Pantone colours of these lemonades and designed eight bags that tie back to the actual beverages,” Cormack said.

The packable styles include four backpacks and four tote bags, each foldable into their own internal storage pocket.

“We chose these products because they’re perfect to take on a summer excursion, like a light hike or a trip to the beach or out on a boat,” he said.

Cool drinks and even cooler (sorry, we had to) accessories aside, the shop also boasts a “fun and summery” decor, including soft pink walls and lemon-inspired light fixtures. The shop is sure to end up on more than a few Instagram feeds throughout the summer.

So, why did Cormack and his crew choose the slightly out-ofthe-way locale of Deep Cove over a more central spot for the brand’s first stand-alone pop-up shop in Metro Vancouver?

“Whether it’s going up the Quarry Rock hike or getting Honey’s doughnuts, it seems like locals and tourists alike love the little village of Deep Cove,” he said when asked about the North Shore community.

“Being able to speak to this wide cross-section of people is a great opportunity.”

After The Lemonade Stand closes its doors at the end of the year, Herschel fans won’t have long to wait before the company unveils its first brand-owned store in 2018.

“It’s going to be just over 5,000 square feet on Water Street, and it’s going to be a really exciting place and a big undertaking for the brand,” Cormack said of the upcoming Gastown boutique.

“The planning and design is coming into its final stages, and we’re looking forward to sharing more about it closer to its opening in 2018.”

With the pop-up shop open, and planning for the first bricks-andmortar store well underway, what’s next for the local company?

“Continuing to apply our filter to multiple categories, whether it be jackets, apparel, or travel accessories,” Cormack says. “We’re excited to continue to build out the brand and continue to build out our office here in Vancouver with our talented staff and collaborators.

“We’re having a lot of fun doing what we’re doing, so we’re just going to keep on doing it.”
