Cleared for launch at Superfly Ziplines

- FEET BANKS

If the old saying is, “life begins at the edge of your comfort zone,” then Whistler’s Superfly Ziplines might be the fountain of youth. A place where childhood daydreams of being able to fly become reality and anyone can break the rusty chains of gravity and take to the skies. Ziplining is the act of sliding down a taut cable in a harness and pulley. And while Superfly Ziplines are technically still attached to the earth on each end, the experience itself was designed with airtime at the forefront. “With this project, we were really inspired by the word and sensation of ‘flight,’” says Joey Houssian, owner of the Superfly Ziplines and The Adventure Group Whistler (TAG). “That means building it high and long and not just through the trees but above them as well. We wanted to approximate all the incredible feelings of flight.” And they did. Located ten minutes north of the Village and built high above 16-Mile Creek on the northeastern flanks of Rainbow Mountain, Superfly boasts Whistler’s only backcountry ziplines and the longest tandem lines in Canada. The tour starts with a custom 4x4 ride through lush coastal rainforest, but the real action is far, far from the ground. Those final moments before launch are electric and exhilarating. After a final safety check of the cutting-edge harness and braking systems, Superfly guides offer words of technique/encouragement until… liftoff! Zipliners step into thin air and soar at speeds that consistently hit 100 kilometres per hour and heights of up to 200 metres. Superfly is big, fast and exhilarating, and with the longest line running for over a minute, there’s still plenty of time to enjoy the Coast Mountain views—two Superfly ziplines stretch well over a kilometre in length. Of course everything, even the freedom of flight, is better when shared with a friend. Tandem ziplines allow two people to take to the skies together, capturing epic photos or video of each other while shouting joy into the wind. Flight is an intrinsic human obsession, and who hasn’t wanted to fly like Superman at some point? The next best thing is Superfly. For more information visit Superflyziplines.com.
