Whistler Presents Free Outdoor Concert Series

- DAVID BROATCH

There’s good news and bad news about this year’s Whistler Presents Outdoor Concert Series. The bad news is that the popular free concert series is now halfway to the finish line; but the good news is that the series runs right into September and you still have time to catch some amazing shows in an outdoor setting that might just blow your mind. Vancouver’s exciting funk/ bhangra/Celtic/electronic world music stars Delhi 2 Dublin will be bringing their fusion of good sounds to the mountain on Friday, August 25, while Jann Arden—best known for her big hit Insensitive—will be taking the stage Friday, September 1. Great Big Sea frontman Alan Doyle hits the stage solo one night later, while East Vancouver soul band The Boom Booms will throw down their signature silky R&B grooves on September 2. The whole thing wraps up September 9 with Ruckus Deluxe bringing high-energy party mania to the RBC GranFondo Whistler finish-line celebrations. “The shows have been really good this year and the weather has been just fantastic,” says Tourism Whistler’s Communications Specialist Marion Young. “The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra kicked this season off with a wonderful concert and every event in the series has been so well received by locals and visitors alike.” It’s hard to imagine a more spectacular setting than Whistler’s Olympic Plaza on a warm summer evening—nestled between the peaks and surrounded by the lights of the village, this magical venue is open to the stars and provides a unique outdoor concert experience that you will never forget. “People bring blankets to sit on and there’s plenty of room to get up as close as you like to the action,” adds Young. “Another thing I love about this series is seeing our guests experience first-hand the amazing talent of some of our Canadian artists.” Young has one piece of advice, “If you’re thinking of coming up for a show and you’re looking for a good party, the weekend of GranFondo (September 9) is absolutely amazing up here. There are tons of riders from all over looking to wind down after a tough race, the locals come out and you won’t find a better party band anywhere than Ruckus Deluxe, who’ll be there at the finish line to wind up the 2017 Outdoor Concert Series.” Check out whistler.com/ events/concerts for more.
