Vancouver residents will vote for a single city councillor and nine school trustees today in the city’s first byelection in 25 years.

Nine candidates are vying for a council seat abandoned over the summer by Geoff Meggs, who took a job as Premier John Horgan’s chief of staff.

Another 19 candidates seek one of nine positions as trustees with School District 39.

Voters are replacing the entire school board, after the previous board was fired by the provincial government a year ago. A full list of candidates, including statements and contact information, can be found online at vancouver.ca.

Those elected will see their terms end after the 2018 general municipal elections next October.

Registered voters can cast their ballots at one of 51 voting locations scattered across the city, including one on the University Endowment Lands, where registered voters can vote for school trustees only.

Polls open at 8 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. The city said it will likely release unofficial results around 11 p.m. To vote, a person must be 18 or older, a Canadian citizen, a B.C. resident for at least six months, a Vancouver resident for at least 30 days and not be disqualified by law. Anyone who voted in the last provincial election may already be on the voter’s list, but can double-check at vancouver. ca/by-election. Those not on the list can register at a voting place by bringing two pieces of ID — such as a driver’s licence, B.C. ID, social insurance card, passport, credit card or utility bill — including one with a signature.

Voters are warned not to take a photograph of their ballot and post it to social media. The Vancouver Charter specifically prohibits reproductions of ballots.

The city said 4,174 ballots were cast after two days of advance voting on Oct. 4 and 10.
